On our way to Niagara Falls this week there was an accident on the QEW just before the Welland bridge. It backed up traffic for several kilometers and absolutely no cars were moving at all. We waited over an hour and a half to get moving again. {July 31st, 2006}

In my search for more photos of team flags around my neighbourhood I came across thousands, at Jane and Wilson's southeast corner's market. Thousands of Ghana fans were celebrating their team's win over the US, 2-1. However, shortly after I arrived around 7pm someone was stabbed and the cops and EMS crews ended the party. Ghana will now face Brazil in the round of 16, which I hope they will win. I will have more pictures of today's events up here soon, stay tuned. {June 22nd, 2006}O_x

This is why we urban planners hate the 'burbs (actually I shouldn't say that, many 'urban' planners love the suburbs for some strange reason). Surburban developers clear hectares of land of their forest and richness to build single-family house on twisted street patterns. This neighbourhood will probably be so unoriginal that if you stood in it when it is complete you couldn't even be able to tell what neighbourhood you are in, in what city, or even what part of North America, really! I mean, look at it now, you probably have no idea where this is other than obviously not in a major city. Its in Vaughan, between Major Mackenzie and Rutherford, between Keele and Dufferin I believe. See, its so boring up there I don't even know where I was. But the amount of land on this property is huge, it probably takes up over half of that square made by those four major routes mentioned. {May 28th, 2006}O_x

The new Continuing Education building at Ryerson University (Don't ask me what these guys are supposed to be doing!).This is the facade of an old building that they used as the front of the new building, an excellent technique for projects that would potentially tear down all of important and beautiful buildings in Toronto. The old front entrance of the school that sat where Kerr Hall now stands in Ryerson is the entrance to the athletic centre and the old arches from an old hospital on University are kept on display on one of the upper floors of the Princess Margaret Hospital. {May 20th, 2006}O_x

Crescent Town

This neighbourhood is Crescent Town, located beside Victoria Park Station. This community is built on high ground, is surrounded by the forests, and only 2 or 3 roads enter the area. It is practically designed to keep people in. The roads that enter and exit aren't meant for pedestrians, pedestrians are meant to keep in the complex. The complex has a main level where people can travel from building to building or to the local school, restaurant, health club, pharmacy and other stores. Most of the pedestrian paths do not offer a view outside Crescent Town, only the next building or townhouse. The different levels seperate the pedestrians from the automobiles for the most part. The towers are very tall, 30 floors at the most, and the community must be extremely dense. A good thing about this neighbourhood is that opposite the subway making for quick and convenient rapid transit travel. Crescent Town serves the needs of the local people but they are not encouraged to leave the neighbourhood. It is an example of Le Corbusier's Radiant City concept where a community has a high density with all the amenities and services the residents need. Le Corbusier meant for it to be applied to larger neighbourhoods and entire districts of a city, even an entire city. In Toronto the city has used these 'Super Block' designs only for their social housing and low-income neighbourhoods in order to marginalize the people's interaction with the rest of the city. {May 15th, 2006}O_x

Everyone knows this McDonalds. This is the one at Finch and Weston that stood proud over the valley. Now its direlect derelect along with the mall beside it. But the franchise did move down the street so all is not lost for the Mciddies loving people. But this is another sad image in this neighbourhood that has so much potential. Toronto's Official Plan and specific Secondary Plan calls for residential uses on this entire site that includes the abandoned mall. Commercial opportunities will also exist to make it more diverse and economically stable so it won't fall apart again. That is many years away but hopefully it will be for the better. {April 8th, 2006} O_x

Yesterday was a depressing day despite the nice weather, clear sky and good Raptor tickets. The day could have been better but fate never favours me. Not because the Raptors didn't win (they're already out of playoff contention so who cares), not because they didn't even score 100 points for me to get free pizza (that really sucked), but rather other reasons. I recognized this beautiful model from a fashion show competition in my neighbourhood that I watched a couple of years ago, as well as from my school campus a couple of times. She is Patricia J and I had to take a picture with her as she rocked her Carabao energy drink shirt, the company she was working for that day. If you have been to Yonge and Dundas in the last 5 years you know it is a mess because of the Metropolis entertainment complex being built on the north east corner. This alley off of Gould Street is where most of supplies for the Metropolis project is being received. Now the construction crew has taken over half of Victoria Street so wer Ryerson students are forced to put up with taking detours, walking indirect paths and walking on dirt, rocks and everything else every morning. This building better be beautiful. At least they've picked up construction. It's taken them 5 years to build 4 floors and a basement but those 4 floors have been built in the last 3 months so if politicians, bureaucrats and private minds take it easy for a while maybe it could be done by the end of the year. Here's hoping!

Black Creek at Jane and Wilson {March 1st, 2006}

Mutual Street, north of Dundas Street East. These buildings are actually opposites: one is ugly the other is amazing. The one on the right has nice architecture on the outside that blends into the Ryerson community, has a Dominion supermarket and several other businesses in it, and has residential units upstairs. The one on the left is some government building or an office building or something, I never bother to find out. {March 2nd, 2006}

'South Side Jane'

These two pictures were taken at Jane and Lawrence West. I like this corner; Panzerotto Pizza makes good pizza and any store here sees some unique characters once the sun sets. I guess some people consider this side of Hwy 401 on Jane Street 'South Side Jane.' I don't know what 'TGK' stands for though. {February 18th, 2006}

Gould Street, Ryerson Univesity on both sides, Ryerson students on both sides and on the street. During peak times there are tons of student on this street. Ryerson is a very compact school for 20,000 students plus instructors {February 2nd, 2006}

Ryerson's new Student Campus Centre. It looks okay, a lot of room in front has already been proven useful. Like a lot of new buildings today, the walls inside are just exposed concrete. {January 23rd, 2006}

Ryerson has a mix of old and new buildings. On the right is Oakham House were students like to chill, eat and drink. On the left is the new engineering building. It looks pretty nice on the outside and okay on the inside. However, it wasn't cleverly designed because students get jumbled up at the most popular entrance/exit right at the street corner even though there is another one down the side of the building. {January 23rd, 2006}
